Woven Wardrobe: Denim / Jeans
Date TBD, 2025
Three week session - $2000
Enrollment is limited to 6 Students
Denim is a now-ubiquitous part of the global clothing lexicon, with a role as both a marker of cultural change in the U.S. throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, and a nexus point of the complex histories of cotton and indigo. In this three-week class we will each weave and sew a sturdy pair of jeans to wear throughout the year.
During this three week class we will:
- skein and dye cotton yarn with indigo
- weave a sturdy 2/1 or 3/1 twill denim
- create a custom jeans pattern
- learn classic techniques such as top-stitched seams, patch and inset pockets, button fly, rivets, and more
In an effort to create continuity between these in-person intensives, there will be opportunities to meet remotely as a group to support each other in our ongoing study, share our work and insights, and ask and answer questions.
As we weave and sew our garments, we also weave ourselves together. These are not the only clothes we’ll ever need - threads will wear thin, our bodies will change. By putting our time and attention into connection and relationship, we’re not only building the skills to clothe ourselves into the future, but also forging a community to support us in doing that, company for the task ahead.
And— the place where we do this matters. During our time together, we’ll experience the changing of the seasons and participate in the ongoing tasks of sustaining rural life in the mountains of northern Vermont. During the class, students are encouraged to stay in the group farmhouse and prepare meals, play music, and share stories together.
